How To Make CBD Oil: 4 Easy Steps

Make Homemade CBD Oil

Since hemp was legalized back in 2018, CBD quickly became a popular way to help alleviate all manner of symptoms from pain to anxiety, allowing the user to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of cannabis without getting high.

CBD oil products, in particular, are very popular due to their versatility and simplicity in use. But in a largely unregulated market, how are you supposed to know if what you’re getting in the bottle is what you’re paying for?

One of the easiest ways to be sure about what’s in the bottle is by making it yourself. So, in this article, we’re going to explain how to make CBD oil from flower at home.

Source Premium Quality Hemp Flower

In order to create a high-quality CBD oil, you need to start with premium quality high-CBD flower and this means finding a reliable supplier that consistently provides fresh, properly cured hemp flower. We recommend you try Plain Jane or Green Unicorn Farms as we’ve always been impressed with their strain selection and quality.

Both of these suppliers have great reputations in the hemp industry and readily provide access to third-party lab reports that verify the cannabinoid content and potency of all of their hemp flower strains.

Sourcing a High Quality Carrier Oil

When you’re selecting a carrier oil, we recommend choosing a high-quality, healthy fat source. We often use extra virgin olive oil due to its incredible antioxidant properties, but hemp seed oil, avocado oil, MCT oil, and coconut oil are also highly nutritious, making them an excellent choice too.

How to Make CBD Oil – A Step-by-Step Guide

Now that you have your ingredients ready, it’s time to get cooking. Just follow these four simple steps to make your own CBD-infused oil at home.

CBD Oil Recipe Ingredients

  • 5-10 grams of high-CBD hemp flower
  • 1 cup of carrier oil

Equipment:

  • crockpot or double boiler
  • mixing bowl
  • strainer
  • piece of cheesecloth
  • storage container (mason jar or similar)

Method

  1. Break up Your Flower

The first thing you’ll need to do is to break down your CBD flower into small pieces. If you have a grinder then this process is quick and easy, but otherwise, you can tear up the buds with your fingers or use a pair of scissors to chop it finely.

  1. Cook Your Flower

Next up, you need to convert the CBDA (the acidic precursor to CBD) contained within your flower into CBD by decarboxylating it. This process happens automatically when you smoke CBD flower, but when you’re making CBD oil you need to decarb it yourself by cooking it. There are some recipes that skip this step and call for a longer infusion time, but decarboxylating your flower will help you achieve more reliable results, as well as result in a more stable product.

Place your carrier oil and ground-up hemp flower buds into your crockpot (or the top section of your double boiler) and gently heat the mixture up. Use your thermometer to check that the temperature remains between 130 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit (don’t go over 200F) and cook your mixture in this manner for around 45-60 minutes.

  1. Strain Your Oil

Next up, you’ll want to allow your mixture to cool slightly so that you can safely strain all of the plant matter from it. Line a strainer with a piece of cheesecloth and carefully pour your CBD oil through it, squeezing out as much liquid as you can get through the cloth.

If you don’t have any cheesecloth, then paper coffee filters will also work.

  1. Store Your CBD Oil

Pour your fresh CBD oil into an airtight container for storage and keep the container in a cool, dark place (ideally the fridge). We try to use colored mason jars as the color tint helps to protect your CBD oil from sun damage (just in case you leave it out on the counter for too long).

How to Achieve More Consistent Results

Putting your hemp flower through the decarboxylation process by cooking it isn’t an exact science. In fact, it’s estimated that it typically results in 70% of the cannabinoids decarboxylating properly.

If you want the most potent and consistent results, however, you should invest in a decarboxylator like this one from Ardent. The Ardent Nova uses sensors to heat your flower to the exact temperature and cooks it for the optimal time needed for the cannabinoids to convert fully before you begin making your oil infusion.

The machine holds up to an ounce of hemp flower and you can also use it to infuse your oil by simply placing the jar of oil and flower back into the machine a second time, before straining the final product.

How to Store Your CBD Oil

If you plan on using your CBD oil for cooking, then you can leave your CBD oil in a mason jar in the fridge, but if you want to take CBD drops sublingually, then you may also want to invest in a smaller bottle or vial that has a dropper built into the lid.

You can normally find these bottles at the local pharmacist and they will allow you to measure out small doses more accurately and consistently.

How to Make CBD Oil Stronger

If you want to make your CBD oil stronger next time, then you basically have three options. You can invest in a decarboxylator to ensure that all of the CBD is being fully activated. You could also shop around for a more potent CBD strain, or simply increase the amount of CBD flower you use in the recipe.

How to Make CBD Oil Taste Better

If you don’t like the distinct hempy taste of your CBD oil, then feel free to add your own flavorings. A couple of drops of essential oil (peppermint or citrus) will help mask the flavor, as will vanilla extract.

If you plan on cooking with it, then you’ll be better off mixing it with stronger flavored foods or try building up your tolerance to the taste over time.
