CBD Tastes Weird: 5 Ways to Mask the Flavor of CBD Oil

CBD Tastes Weird: 5 Ways to Mask the Flavor of CBD Oil by Stephanie Jensen at CBD Origin

While the benefits of CBD oil are abundant, its natural flavor can often be considered an “acquired taste.”

“CBD tastes weird…“earthy,” “piney,” “strange.”

Depending on the unique composition of any given CBD oil, these are some of the descriptions we’ve heard about the flavor of CBD. Sure, some people don’t mind the flavor of CBD and others that have gotten used to it. Still, there are also a good amount of people who are indifferent about its flavor or just can’t stand it.

Now, it’s probably not the worst taste in the world, but if you don’t enjoy the flavor of CBD, why not figure out a way to mask its flavor?

For those who think CBD tastes weird but still want to enjoy its many benefits, this list is for you!

TL;DR? I personally don’t think the CBD taste is bad, but everyone has different preferences. There are different ways to mask the flavor. You can also try CBD-flavored products. Have mints or a snack/drink handy if they don’t work. You can also brush your teeth after.

What Does CBD Oil Taste Like?

If you’ve never tried CBD, you may be wondering if it’s really THAT bad. The best way to describe the taste of CBD is earthy. The best CBD has a very mild taste, but some strains are more flavorful than others. Don’t be surprised if you get a grassy taste from your CBD.

I personally don’t think CBD has that strong of a flavor. Is it earthy? Yes. But I mainly taste the carrier oil. Some oils, such as hemp seed oil, offer other natural flavors that reduce the nuttiness of CBD.

5 Ways to Mask the Flavor of CBD Oil

CBD Tastes Weird

If you have tried CBD products and don’t like the way they taste, you can easily mask the flavor using one of these methods.

1. Use CBD Isolate Products

Typically, full spectrum CBD products feature an earthy flavor described above. With that being said, the most simple way to avoid an unfavorable taste is to use a CBD isolate product.

CBD Isolate is CBD in its isolated state, meaning it has been extracted and separated from the other compounds found in the Cannabis plant

Full spectrum CBD or “Whole Plant CBD” is not isolated and contains various other compounds found in the hemp plant, such as CBG, CBDa, and THC.

Because full spectrum CBD is a blend of various cannabis compounds, it also exhibits the aromas and flavors of these compounds and the cannabis plant as a whole. As a result, full spectrum oils taste like the cannabis strain derived from.

It is important to note that while these additional cannabis compounds do cause full spectrum CBD oils to have a distinct, earthy flavor, they also provide additional medicinal properties that enhance and increase the benefits that CBD can provide. In other words, when using a CBD isolate, you may be missing out on the benefits that only full spectrum CBD can provide.

2. Try CBD Capsules

One of the most convenient ways to take CBD is in capsule form. The CBD oil is concealed within a casing with a capsule, so whether it’s a CBD isolate blend or full spectrum blend, it won’t touch your tongue. Problem solved. Keep in mind that it takes a little bit longer for the CBD to enter your system with capsules as it needs to first pass through your digestive tract.

3. Use a CBD Additive with Your Favorite E-Liquid

If you’re a vaper, CBD additives are a great option to conceal the flavor of CBD. Simply mix the additive with your favorite e-liquid, and you’ve got the best of both worlds; your preferred flavor and the benefits of CBD.

4. Drink a Cup of CBD Tea

While drinking CBD tea does not necessarily conceal the flavor of CBD, tea makers actually craft their tea blends to complement the natural aroma and flavor of the cannabis plant. Instead of removing the flavor of CBD, it uses it to create a wonderfully relaxing experience.

5. Eat Some CBD Gummies

Remember those tasty Flintstone gummy vitamins we loved when we were kids?CBD gummies use that same concept. Blend that earthy CBD oil in sweet gummy goodness, and now it tastes like candy (but packed with benefit-rich CBD)! This is why CBD gummies are one of the most enjoyable ways to take CBD.CBD gummies won’t conceal the flavor of CBD 100%, but they do a great job of offsetting its flavor with something sweet and tasty.

What to Do After Taking a CBD Tincture

sarah takforyan

The previous advice won’t apply to everyone. For example, some users would rather try a tincture over an edible. If this sounds like you, there’s not much that you can do to mask the taste. But there are ways to improve the process of taking a CBD tincture.

Eat Mints

After taking the tincture, eat a breath mint or chew on gum. To really mask out the flavor, hold a small mint, like a Tic Tac, under your tongue. This way, you’ll take your CBD, and your breath will be minty fresh!

Have a Snack or Drink

After you take CBD, don’t be afraid to chow down. Have a snack nearby. But be mindful of the snack you eat. Full fat food improves CBD absorption by 400%. Great snack options include nuts, nut butter, seeds, avocado, and whole-milk yogurt.

You don’t have to eat every time you consume CBD, but you should at least have a drink handy.

I always drink water when I take CBD, but you should squeeze a lemon in the water to really get out the best.

I think coffee masks the CBD flavor better than anything, but I understand that not everyone drinks coffee. If you’re not a coffee drinker, drink fruit juice after taking CBD.

Brush Your Teeth

I take CBD first thing in the morning and in the evening, so I usually brush my teeth before and after taking CBD anyway. However, I’m reading that absorption rates improve if you brush your teeth before taking CBD. In that case, I suggest trying one of these other methods.

Mix CBD and Honey

Honey is a natural sweetener, and the flavor is potent enough to mask the CBD taste. Right after dropping in CBD oil, follow it up with some honey. You don’t need a lot of honey, just a few drops. Leave both under the tongue for about 60 seconds.

Try a Flavored CBD Tincture

There are so many CBD tincture flavors out there! From fruity flavors like lemon, lime, and mango to dessert flavors such as chocolate mint and skittles, you have a variety of CBD tincture flavors available to you.

Always read the ingredients and know where the CBD tincture flavor comes from. Ensure the flavors are natural. Contact the company and make sure they’re food-grade essential oils if you see essential oils are used.

Best-Tasting CBD Products

To avoid using natural-flavored CBD, your best bet is to take delicious CBD products. Here, I scoured the internet to find some of the best tasting and unique CBD products out there.

CVSciences CBD Oil Drops

CVSciences CBD Oil Drops

Don’t let the “unflavored” label fool you. These CBD drops are made with monk fruit.

Monk fruit is a small, melon-like fruit. It has a very sweet flavor and is often used as a natural sweetener. If you don’t like the flavor of the monk fruit, this CBD oil is also available in peppermint flavor.

I also like this CBD oil because it’s potent. This CBD brand uses full spectrum hemp extract, so you’ll get the added benefits of fast and effective healing.

Pros

  • Tastes great
  • Effective
  • This brand delivers quickly but is also sold in grocery and health food stores (I found them at Earthfare)
  • Excellent customer service

Cons

  • Expensive

oHHo CBDots Tins in Apple Rose

Best CBD for Eczema

I’m very picky about edibles, but these are so unique I just had to include them. The “dots” look like little donut holes.

Each dot contains 15mg of full spectrum CBD. The taste is best described as an apple with rose petal infusion, finished with a splash of lemon juice. It’s very floral yet spicy, which is interesting.

Pros

  • High-quality
  • Comes in a tin that’s convenient for storage and travel
  • Delicious taste

Cons

  • Expensive

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil

Charlotte’s Web CBD Oil

Charlotte’s Web offers its full spectrum CBD oil in various flavors. These vary from lemon to mint chocolate. I like this oil because it doesn’t contain any sketchy ingredients. Even the mint chocolate one is made with organic flavored oil.

Pros

  • High-quality
  • Great taste (seems that most people like the mint chocolate flavor)
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Not all flavors taste good (it doesn’t seem like the orange tastes good)
  • Have received customer service complaints

Tonic Vibes Sea Salt and Cacao Nibs CBD Dark Chocolate

Tonic Vibes Sea Salt and Cacao Nibs CBD Dark Chocolate

All you had to say was dark chocolate, and I’m sold! Tonic Vibes uses roasted and crushed cacao beans from Ecuador, so the taste is fruity but still has that delicious bittersweet flavor. A taste of sea salt makes these candies irresistible.

You can rest assured that these chocolates are gluten-free and vegan. There’s 10mg CBD per serving (I assume one chocolate is one serving).

Pros

  • High-quality chocolates that have results
  • Rich, dark chocolate taste
  • Beautiful packaging

Cons

  • You won’t be able to resist eating more than one!

Kanibi Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture in Skittles

Kanibi Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture in SkittlesOkay, all you had to say was Skittles, and I’m intrigued. Kanibi possibly can’t achieve this flavor naturally, right? However, Kanibi says they use no artificial flavors and preservatives.

Their full spectrum CBD oil is made with 100% organic hemp that has been treated with safe extraction practices.

In addition to Skittles, this CBD oil is made in various flavors such as lemon-lime, peppermint, cinnamon, and choco mint. This product is pretty pricey, but you get what you pay for.

Pros

  • High-quality and effective
  • Transparent company
  • All of the flavors taste great, but Skittles and Cinnamon seem to be the most popular

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Customers complained about the dropper – it’s hard to read, and dosing is difficult

FAQs

Question: Does CBD Have an Aftertaste?

Answer: CBD does have an aftertaste, but I personally think it’s a slight aftertaste. While the terpenes produce an aftertaste, I mainly taste the additional ingredients in the tincture, such as the carrier oil.

In addition, some CBD products come with additional aftertastes, whether they be good or bad. I see this most with gummies. If you prefer using a tincture, I don’t think the aftertaste is strong or bad at all.

But if you don’t like the taste of CBD tinctures, you won’t like the aftertaste it produces.

Question: I Prefer Using a CBD Tincture But Hate the Aftertaste! What Can I Do to Get Rid of It?

Answer: Some of the advice I mentioned will also get rid of the aftertaste. Eat mints, brush your teeth, eat a snack, and drink coffee. I suggest mixing the CBD with honey to prevent an aftertaste.

Question: Will CBD Oil Make Me High?

Answer: CBD oil won’t get you high because it’s not a psychoactive cannabinoid. Even full spectrum CBD strains won’t cause a high since there’s little THC content.

This doesn’t mean you won’t feel positive effects when using CBD; they’re just not as intense as a THC high. Most people feel relaxed, which is what I experience when using CBD. You may also feel happy.

Question: I Found a CBD Product With a Delicious Flavor, But It’s 500mg. Is That Too Much for New Users?

Answer: When I first started using CBD, I used a 500mg tincture!

You may feel some effects; I just felt very relaxed for me. However, I suggest using a weaker product if you’re still unsure. If your heart is set on the 500mg, use less than what’s recommended. This is easier to do with a tincture since you fill-up the dropper up to 1 ml.

Most brands recommend you take the full 1 ml dropper a day. However, you can start by taking less than 0.5 ml/day until you feel you’re used to the CBD effects.

Bottomline

And there you have it, folks! I think we can all agree that even if you think that CBD tastes weird, the benefits it provides well outweigh its flavor. We hope you enjoyed our list of 5 ways to use CBD if you dislike its flavor.
