One of the most difficult things for new users to CBD is figuring out how much CBD should I take?
Since CBD is not recognized by the FDA as a dietary supplement, yet, there is no standardized recommendation for the amount of CBD you should take at a time.
CBD dosing can be confusing because of this. However, don’t worry. CBD School is in session, and we’ll tell you all you need to know about the proper dosing of CBD, or cannabidiol, products.
CBD Dosage Explained
There is no straightforward answer when it comes to how much CBD you should take. It depends on several different factors, but body composition is probably the most important.
As a very general guideline, most CBD organizations agree that taking about .25mg of CBD per pound of body weight will get you the results you want.
Also, everyone is made just a little bit differently, therefor most people respond to CBD a bit differently.
The following is a list of everything that goes into how much CBD you should be using to get the relief you need:
- body composition
- severity of the symptoms
- tolerance to CBD
- what you eat right before taking CBD
Makes sense, right?
How Much CBD Should I Take for Pain?
Pain is extremely hard to define. Sure, it means that something hurts, but how much pain someone is in can vary from person to person.
Start with the recommended serving of .25mg of CBD per body weight, and increase as needed. Most people will see results with this dose of CBD for pain.

If you feel like you might need some more CBD for your pain, try increasing the dose to .35mg of CBD per pound of bodyweight.
How Much CBD Balm Should I Apply?
Most CBD balm is labeled via total mg of CBD per jar of CBD balm, cream, or lotion. This makes it hard to know how much CBD you are applying when you rub the cream on the affected area for relief.
It is suggested to apply a dime-sized amount of topical CBD to the area causing discomfort. Reapply throughout the day, as needed.
Starting off with a 500mg balm would be ideal. I, personally, wouldn’t start with anything less.
How Much CBD Should I Take for Anxiety?

Some people get their anxiety under control by taking products like CBD oil, and CBD gummies.
If you don’t know, studies show that CBD can actually manage anxiety in some people. While CBD by itself isn’t the best sleep aid (see more on our CBD for sleep reviews), it can really make a huge impact on anxiety, for those who struggle with it.
Anxiety can be severely crippling, and few things are worse than having something like a panic attack.
Try using a little bit more than the recommended dosing for CBD if you struggle with anxiety, and see how you respond.
If you missed it above, the recommended dose of CBD is roughly .25mg of CBD per pound of bodyweight. You may notice yourself begin to get very, very relaxed. This is a good indicator that the anxiety is fading, and the CBD is working.
Summary | How Much CBD Do You Need?
Well, there you have it.
As you can see, there really is no standard response to how much CBD you should take. Once the Food and Drug Administration comes up with dietary supplement guidelines for CBD use, we’ll have a much better answer for you.
For now, remember the general guideline that states you should use approximately .25mg of CBD per pound of body weight.
Always, always start with the lowest effective dose, and work your way up from there. Some people can develop a tolerance to CBD, and this will help keep your tolerance very low, for as low as possible.
CBD products are expensive too – there’s no sense in overdoing it.
