How CBD Helps Sleep Disorders

Insomnia is more common than you may think. This sleep disorder makes it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep for longer periods of time. In fact, it is estimated that 30% of the population. suffers from insomnia. Over the years, there have been many possible treatments for insomnia ranging from medication to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). However, there is another option that is gaining popularity; cannabidiol (CBD).

You may have heard people talk about how CBD is wonderful for treating muscle aches and relieving anxiety. But CBD has shown to relieve other issues and sleep disorders are just one of many.

Read on to learn more about CBD and how it can help you sleep better.

What Exactly Is CBD?

Before getting into how it helps you sleep, you should know what CBD is. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a component of the cannabis, or marijuana, plant. The cannabis plant contains another compound called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike THC, CBD is the safer of the two and is not psychoactive.

CBD has now been implemented in many products including lotions, oils and consumables. It has even been approved by the FDA as a way to treat epileptic seizures.

What Causes Insomnia?

Insomnia is caused by many things. Stress and a noisy environment are two notable causes.

Here are a few other causes of insomnia:

  • Anxiety
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Various medications such as steroids, diuretics, beta-blockers, and SSRIs
  • Caffeine, which is primarily found in coffee, but can also be in teas, sodas, and even dark chocolate
  • Depression
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

You might be wondering how CBD can help treat such things. Our bodies contain an endocannabinoid system. This system is what provides balance throughout the body. It helps balance things such as our immune system, appetite, and memory. CBD is essentially a stimulant for our endocannabinoid system in that it helps the body maintain homeostasis.

How to Use CBD to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

You can use a majority of the CBD products that were previously mentioned to sleep better. You can rub CBD oil on your skin, or consume it with proper dosing in pill form, capsule or an edible. You can also inhale CBD with a vaporizer.

Some people find it helpful to vape CBD oil, which has shown to enter your system faster. However, vaping is a form of smoking and may cause respiratory health problems. Also, remember that these methods are not for everyone. You need to consult your doctor to determine if it is safe for you to use CBD in any way.

Although the treatment of sleep disorders continues to evolve, there is still more research needed to determine how CBD helps sleep disorders. We currently do not know if CBD is a suitable treatment for other sleep disorders, like sleep apnea and narcolepsy. As with any type of vitamin or supplement, always check with your treating physician prior to trying out CBD.
