Sleep, or rather the lack of sleep, is an ongoing issue in our country. With unresolved sleep issues linked to more serious disorders, it’s easy to understand why we collectively devote hundreds of billions of dollars each year on expenses related to sleep, sleep loss, and sleep solutions.1
Researchers estimate that up to 70 million people in our country are not getting the rest they deserve. Some have difficulty falling asleep; others lose precious hours each night due to frequent waking. While there are medications available, a considerable number of sleep-deprived people are hesitant to use them. That’s not too surprising. Over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids can cause morning grogginess, chemical dependency, sleepwalking, and worrisome unconscious behaviors.2
That leaves a significant number of people still searching for solutions to their most pressing sleep issues. While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution for every sleep concern, researchers have noted intriguing results while investigating the sleep-promoting potential of hemp-derived CBD.
The Universal Regulatory System Influencing Sleep
CBD’s sleep-promoting potential is explained by how this plant-based cannabinoid interacts with the regulatory system responsible for nearly every essential function in your body, your endocannabinoid system (ECS). When your endocannabinoid system is working efficiently, your body produces all the ECS messengers it needs to keep essential processes functioning at optimal levels. But illness, injury, and stress can tax the system, creating a demand for ECS messengers that exceeds the supply. Without enough messengers to interact with your ECS receptors, the system can get off balance. Essential processes may not work as efficiently as they could.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a phytocannabinoid, a plant-based version of the ECS messengers produced in your body. As CBD mimics the effects of your ECS messengers, it restores communication between the messengers and receptors. Since the signaling between your ECS messengers and receptors regulates everything from your moods, emotions, and stress responses to hormonal regulation and sleep cycles, supporting ECS function with CBD has considerable health and wellness potential.
Investigating the Potential Benefits of CBD for Sleep and Sleep Cycle Regulation
CBD’s ability to interact with numerous receptors throughout your body explains why so many CBD users report favorable results using plant-based cannabinoids for so many seemingly unrelated health and wellness concerns.3 Individual results seem to depend on which essential processes might be restored to balance through ECS support.
While most of the evidence supporting the therapeutic potential of CBD is based on animal studies, laboratory tests, user testimonials, and a handful of clinical trials, current research suggests the cannabinoid has considerable potential for improving sleep and sleep quality. Consider the value of the following examples:
- A two-year study performed on 409 adults investigated individual levels of symptom relief for insomnia. While the study involved CBD with varying amounts of THC, researchers concluded that the most noteworthy improvements were achieved using products with high levels of CBD and low THC content. Researchers concluded that cannabinoid use showed “statistically and clinically significant improvement” for symptoms of insomnia.4
- In a small-scale study of 103 adults investigating the effects of CBD for sleep and/or mild anxiety, sleep scores improved within the first month of CBD use for 66.7 percent of study participants. Researchers attributed their findings to a “calming effect in the central nervous system,” but noted that results did fluctuate during the investigation. Of the test subjects reporting mild anxiety symptoms, 79% reported that CBD provided favorable results.5
- Researchers have also noted that CBD has the potential for improving sleep duration, an effect that could help those who frequently wake during the night. Researchers compared CBD to a placebo and the insomnia medication nitrazepam. CBD servings of 40, 80, and 160 mg all showed favorable results.6
- In a survey conducted by Project CBD, survey participants reported a significant reduction in the amount of time it took them to fall asleep, reducing that time from 62 to 20 minutes. Respondents also reported waking less frequently during the night, reducing that average from waking four times per night to just once when using CBD. Although 79 percent of non-CBD users reported feeling tired when they woke up, only 9 percent of CBD users reported tiredness upon waking.7
Combining the Sleep Promoting Potential of CBD with Natural Melatonin
Changes in your routine, stress, crossing time zones, and working swing shifts can disrupt your natural rhythms. Once those patterns are altered, it can be difficult to get back on track. If altering your sleep schedule, reducing caffeine, or some of the other commonly recommended sleep solutions haven’t been helping you get the sleep you deserve, maybe it’s time to try the sleep-promoting potential of hemp-derived CBD. For a CBD product specifically formulated for nighttime use, consider CBDistillery™ PM Gummies.
Each of our delicious, vegan-friendly PM Gummies contains 30 mg of hemp-derived CBD and 2 mg of melatonin, a safe, natural sleep supplement. While CBD and melatonin each have considerable sleep-promoting potential on their own, you’ll likely find they work even better together.
As the CBD in our PM gummies helps calm your mind and soothe your body, the melatonin helps you fall asleep quickly and sleep comfortably through the night. When you fall asleep easier, spend less time tossing and turning, you’ll wake feeling rejuvenated, refreshed, and ready to start your day.
