Turmeric For Inflammation Relief

Opinion by Jake Crossman

Turmeric is not only a spice that is used to flavor food or gives mustard and curry their color. It is a life-changing plant that can help to increase your body’s overall health and well-being. Turmeric, while being a delicious additive to your food has also been cited as an aid for many different health-related issues. Let’s break down why you need to start incorporating turmeric for inflammation relief, into your daily life, and how it can benefit you outside of food!

What Is Turmeric

Turmeric comes from the Curcuma Longa plant and is closely related to the Ginger spice family. Turmeric contains three naturally occurring phytochemicals called curcuminoids. Phytochemicals are compounds found in certain foods that can also be helpful to humans. Curcumin is the most studied out of these three phytochemicals found in the turmeric root. Curcumin, which is what gives turmeric its yellowish color is how the plant garnered its reputation as a spice. The plant itself comes from Southeast Asia, and, very similarly to the Ashwagandha root, is used in the Ayurveda –  the traditional Indian practice of medicine used in India for thousands of years as a way to help and heal the sick.

Traditionally turmeric was used to help treat skin and upper respiratory infections in Southeast Asia. However, today it is typically taken as a supplement and can be used for a variety of different health reasons, most notably to reduce inflammation caused by arthritis and ulcerative colitis also known as IBS.

How Does Turmeric Relieve Inflammation

One of the key uses for turmeric, outside of seasoning food, is the root’s ability to reduce inflammation in the body.

“For chronic conditions where inflammation starts to affect tissues in your body, taking turmeric may be beneficial (Cleveland Clinic).”

There have been studies done on the effects of taking turmeric for long-term aid in fighting chronic inflammation. In a controlled study group, 45 patients with ulcerative colitis were given two grams of curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, every day for six months. At the end of the study only two of the 45 patients relapsed, the rest stayed in remission. This is a 93% efficacy rate while taking a daily dose of turmeric.

Turmeric can also help with people experiencing chronic pain from arthritis and fibromyalgia. While only taking turmeric may not fully alleviate symptoms, taking a turmeric supplement along with other medications such as Coenzyme Q10 which is an antioxidant used to convert food to energy will allow the turmeric to act as a bridge for full relief from arthritic pain.

Another reason taking turmeric for inflammation relief is because it is great for arthritis, not only because of the anti-inflammatory properties that it has but also the pain-reducing properties that are found in curcumin.

One study found that taking turmeric extract three times daily was comparable to taking a 1,200-milligram dose of ibuprofen daily (MayoClinic).

The inflammation relief coupled with the pain relief is enough to give scientists a reason to consider turmeric an adaptogen medicine. The research is still continuing on the effects that taking a turmeric supplement has on inflammation and the results seem very promising.

Other Benefits Of Taking Turmeric

Outside of inflammation and pain relief, there are several other benefits of taking a turmeric supplement that can greatly impact your daily life in a positive way. Some of the other benefits are:

  • Aiding to fight Crohn’s Disease
  • Reducing cholesterol
  • Anti-depressant qualities
  • IBS relief
  • Cancer recovery medication

A fascinating part of this list is the ability that turmeric has on treating cancer. A spice in our food is aiding in cancer research and helping to save lives. The reason that turmeric is being used in combination with chemotherapy treatments is because of research that was done in a phase one trial where curcumin was used in combination with other medicine on patients with colorectal cancer. The research showed that patients who were taking the supplement saw greatly reduced cancer cell growth and spread (mskcc).

On top of slowing the proliferation of deadly cancer cells, a topical creme solution made of turmeric was used to stop the spread of rashes from chemotherapy, and a mouthwash solution containing curcumin reduced swelling in the mouth. As discussed earlier turmeric also helped to reduce pain in some breast cancer patients as well.

“This is encouraging, Dr. Hou says, adding that similar trials are underway in people with prostate, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer (mskcc).”

This kind of groundbreaking research will enable the future of modern medicine to thrive by combining holistic medicine practices with those of the ancient world thus creating medicine that can cure diseases we never thought curable.

Turmeric For Inflammation Relief: Final Thoughts

Turmeric can be taken in many ways but the most efficient way should be taken in capsule form with an additive to aid in digestion. USA Medical only offers turmeric in capsule form because we believe it is the best and most effective way for the supplement to be consumed. There are no known serious side effects of taking turmeric on a daily basis – for any minimal side effects to show up studies show that you would need to consume over eight pounds in one day! So, it is safe to say that taking a capsule or two on a daily basis will not cause harm.

USA Medical sells organic platinum turmeric supplement capsules to allow you to receive all of the best benefits of taking this amazing root! We also include Bioperine in our turmeric to make it more bioavailable to your body since turmeric itself is not very bio-friendly and will move rather quickly through the digestive system. Bioperine allows for the full efficacy of the turmeric supplement.

Turmeric is frequently purchased with ashwagandha since they both come from the same ancient practices of medicine found throughout Southeast Asia and India. Taking both of these supplements together may drastically improve your overall health and well-being and definitely reduce inflammation.

As you can see, turmeric for inflammation relief is not the only thing it can treat even though that is what it is most effective in doing. The possibilities are endless, and USA Medical will continue to stay on the frontier of new medicine and only offer the best holistic supplements to our customers!
